The 2012 Hyundai Genesis offers luxury, styling and comfort

2012_hyundai_genesis_photo
While not a new car on the market this year, the 2012 Hyundai Genesis has made some changes, notably adding a 5.0-liter V8 to the options along with giving the existing V6 model more power and offering the eight-speed automatic transmission as the norm.

Nice styling means this Hyundai is a looker, falling into the luxury sedan category with the likes of the Buick LaCrosse, Chrysler 300, Ford Taurus, and Toyoto Avalon coming in as competition.

There are three trims available on the Hyundai Genesis and all are rear-wheel-drive in 3.8, 4.6, or the 5.0 R-spec trim levels.

On the 3.8 trim there’s 17-inch wheels, automatic headlights, fog lights, heated mirrors, keyless ignition/entry, cruise control, dual-zone automatic climate control, an eight-way power driver seat, four-way power passenger seat, heated front seats, leather upholstery, a tilt steering wheel, and an auto-dimming rearview mirror.

If you opt for the available Premium Package it adds 18-inch wheels and a few more luxury bells and whistles like automatic wipers, power-folding side mirrors, leather dash and door trim, driver memory functions, and a power rear sunshade as well as a rearview camera.

The technology package comes with the Premium Package goodies and adds to that front and rear parking sensors, adaptive cruise control, a lane-departure warning system, an electronic parking brake, a ventilated driver seat, heated rear seats, and a Bluetooth system with 17 speakers and an in-the-dash CD/DVD changer.

The 4.6 trim offers both of these packages standard, and you also get a leather-wrapped steering wheel. The top of the line 5.0 R-Spec also offers both packages and adds to that 19-inch wheels and a sporty transmission and steering.

Under the hood it’s a 3.8 liter V6 engine with 333 horsepower and 291 pound-feet of torque. On the 4.6 it’s a 4.6 liter V8 engine with 378 horsepower and 324 pound feet of torque. Take it to the top-of-the-line and you get a 5.0 liter direct-injected V8 engine with 429 horsepower and 376 pound feet of torque.

Safety comes in with high marks with antilock brakes and brake assist, traction and stability control, active front head restraints, and front, rear side, and side curtain airbags. Depending on the package you choose, there are also the parking sensors, lane-departure warnings, and a rearview camera that can be had on the 3.8 and that are standard on the 4.6 and 5.0 R-Spec trims.

Inside, the design and styling is elegant and some might wonder, is this really a Hyundai? The model with all the goodies is especially all about creature comforts. Overall, you will feel this is a solid interior well-built with a lot of thought put into the design.

The controls and knobs are well-placed inside too and easy to find and understand along with a touch screen for the navigation mechanism.

The comfort of the seats both in the back and front is also telling you that the makers put in some thought. With all the bells and whistles like heat and plenty of leg room, the 2012 Hyundai Genesis is an excellent road trip car.

You will find that the rear seats don’t fold down if you need extra space, but the trunk is 15.9 cubic feet.

Driving it feels good like a luxury car should and you can move, taking the curves if needed without feeling any loss of control like you find in some models in this class. There is also ample power and even when kicking it up a notch, the ride inside is still quiet, giving it a state-of-the-art luxury capsule feel.

Should You Need to Know: For luxury, the 2012 Hyundai Genesis is one to consider, reminding you more of the Lexus and Infiniti in this class.

Miles Per Gallon: I drove the 2012 Hyundai Genesis 5.0 R-Spec and the gas mileage came in at 16 miles per gallon in the city and 25 miles per gallon on the highway.

Cost:It ran $46,535 for the 5.0 R-Spec with top-of-the-line everything.

VELOSTER NAMED “BEST UNDER $20,000” BY WINDING ROAD MAGAZINE

2012_hyundai_veloster_photo
The all-new 2012 Hyundai Veloster earned the title of “Best Under $20,000” in Winding Road’s 2012 Best Car Of The Year Awards. Each year, Winding Road seeks out and honors the best vehicles, across every level of size, form, and functionality, selected from the hundreds of vehicles they review annually.

“Lower weight plus lower consumption plus lower price equals more fun,” said Seyth Miersma, editor-in-chief, Winding Road. “We’re not math majors, but that’s something like the equation we believe Hyundai must have dreamed up when it first conceived of the 2012 Veloster. We were instant fans of the outstanding gearbox and the chuckable handling that Veloster offered, and quickly realized that the low starting price was likely to make it an enthusiast darling.”

The awards selection process leveraged the opinions of Winding Road’s seasoned staff of test drivers combined with the vehicle’s scoring according to the Winding Road Involvement Index. Using more than 30 points of individual measure, the Involvement Index seeks to quantify (on a 100-point scale) the always-elusive “fun to drive factor.”

“With the Hyundai Veloster, we wanted to show the industry that sleek design and reasonable pricing can go hand in hand,” said Scott Margason, director, Product Planning, Hyundai Motor America. “Veloster combines a stylish image with sporty driving dynamics and outstanding fuel economy, making it perfectly suited for both practical drivers and auto enthusiasts.”

The Veloster is an innovative compact coupe that features ground-breaking design, with a unique third door for easy rear-seat access, Hyundai’s Blue Link® telematics system, Pandora® internet radio with seven-inch touch-screen display and a new 1.6-liter direct-injected four-cylinder engine that can be mated to either Hyundai’s first EcoShift™ dual-clutch transmission or a six-speed manual transmission. The Veloster is also one of four Hyundai vehicles that achieve 40 mpg on the highway, along with the Accent, Elantra and Sonata Hybrid.

Joining the Veloster on the award roster are the Mini Cooper S Coupe, Lotus Evora S, Ford Focus, Audi A7, Jeep Grand Cherokee SRT8, Land Rover LR4, Mazda5, Mazda MX-5, Dodge Charger, Audi S4 and Jaguar XJ. For the full feature on the Winding Road Best Cars Of The Year, check out Issue 78 of Winding Road’s digital magazine.

HYUNDAI IS #1 IN CUSTOMER RETENTION ACCORDING TO J.D. POWER AND ASSOCIATES

Hyundai_logo_2
Hyundai is highest among all automotive brands in J.D. Power and Associates 2012 Customer Retention Study(SM). Now in its ninth year, the study measures the rate at which automotive brands retain their existing customers and examines the reasons why customers remain loyal. Hyundai earned the top spot in the study, improving its retention rate by four percentage points from 2010 to 64 percent in 2012.

According to J.D. Power and Associates, Hyundai's increased retention rate is shaped by its expanding model lineup, as well as the fact that perceptions of the brand's quality and appeal have continued to improve during the past decade.

The 2012 Customer Retention Study is based on responses from 117,001 new-vehicle buyers and lessees, of which 73,733 replaced a vehicle that was previously acquired new. In addition to customer retention, the study also measures the rate at which each automotive brand captures customers from its competitors, known as conquesting.

“We are proud that Hyundai owners show their brand loyalty by choosing to buy another Hyundai vehicle over 60 percent of the time,” said Dave Zuchowski, executive vice president, National Sales, Hyundai Motor America. “Once they experience the styling, comfort and value of Hyundai vehicles, it’s no surprise that they elect to stick with the Hyundai brand. We are thrilled that our vehicles and our dealers are earning the respect and loyalty of our customers.”

Hyundai Elantra wins car of the year at Detroit show

Hyundai_elantra_car_of_the_year_award

The Hyundai Elantra was named North American Car of the Year by a panel of independent automotive journalists at the 2012 North American International Auto Show Monday.

The Elantra beat out the Ford Focus and Volkswagen Passat as finalists for the car of the year. The Evoque beat out the BMW X3 and the Honda CR-V. The finalists were named last month.

John Krafcik, president and CEO of Hyundai North America, said Hyundai has sold more than 200,000 Elantras since the new model was introduced.

Krafcik said the award will help to cement Hyundai's reputation for quality and improvement the company has made since it entered North America in 1986.

The Elantra, which was designed at Hyundai's California studio, is a compact car that gets 40 m.p.g. on the highway.

"It's an amazingly competitive segment. To have this honor feels really good," Krafcik said.

Most other automotive awards, in contrast, are given out by individual publications or organizations. Before Monday's awards were announced, domestic automakers had won 10 North American Car of the Year awards, European automakers had won four and Japanese automakers had won three. Hyundai won in 2009 for the Hyundai Genesis.
